The sensory room at PCMS is available for individual students under the supervision of a teacher or paraeducator. It offers a nurturing, student centered sensory supportive environment. It is used to facilitate self-regulation, relaxation, and sensory awareness. The goal of the room is to address the primary senses of sight, touch, smell, hearing, vestibular and proprioception. Oftentimes, students with autism and other low incidence disabilities have difficulty in their ability to regulate and organize reactions to sensory input or balancing of excitatory and inhibitory inputs, and adapting to environmental changes.
Having a safe place to go that has the desired equipment to help students decompress or stimulate their senses is a vital need when teaching this group of students.
Did you know according to the CDC (Center for Disease Control) 1 in 54 children has been identified with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) according to estimates from the CDC’s Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) Network, according to information released in September 2020.
ASD is reported to occur in all racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups.ASD is more than 4 times more common among boys than among girls.About 1 in 6 (17%) children aged 3–17 years were diagnosed with a developmental disability, as reported by parents, during a study period of 2009-2017. These included autism, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, blindness, and cerebral palsy, among others.
All proceeds from the purchase of this shirt will go toward updating and expanding equipment in the sensory room at Pittsburg Community Middle School for the benefit of all children with sensory needs.
